The Trainer Course is a vital component of the nationwide Leave No Trace program. It is a shortened version of the Master course. Participants receive introductory training in Leave No Trace skills and ethics in a condensed two-day format. The Trainer Course assists the student participants in learning more about the seven principles of Leave No Trace and techniques for disseminating these low impact skills.
Trainer courses are designed for educators, guides, agency employees, and other outdoor professionals. Successful graduates of the Trainer Course gain the skills to teach Leave No Trace techniques and ethics to their clients, friends and family. Participants learn the concepts of Leave No Trace and prepare to teach Leave No Trace curriculum in a variety of settings-schools, camps, parks, wilderness and front country areas. Who: Adults (18+) with some camping and/or backpacking experience.
Cost: $35.00 for PATC Members, $55.00 for Non-PATC members (Join PATC at the time of registration and get the member price!) The cost covers course materials and meals with the exception of lunch for Saturday and Sunday, which the participant should bring.
Description: The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club’s Trail Patrol is offering this two-day, low-mileage backpacking format course designed to enhance your understanding of Leave No Trace practices and ethics and to increase your level of expertise and confidence in teaching Leave No Trace skills. Through focused activities, hands-on field experience and both formal and informal discussions, you will be introduced to concepts and methods that will advance your knowledge of Leave No Trace issues, expand your repertoire of low-impact skills and increase your effectiveness in teaching these important skills to others. Participants should be experienced campers or backpackers. Instruction will concentrate on the incorporation of low impact techniques in camping and backpacking settings, but we will not be teaching basic camping skills. This is a fun course where all participants have a part in demonstrating the choices that can be made to minimize our impact on the land and our resources.
On completion of this course, participants will be registered as Leave No Trace Trainers with the national Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and will receive a certificate of course completion as well as their Leave No Trace Trainer lapel pin.
Gear: Personal backpacking gear. All group gear, such as stoves, cooking equipment and water treatment will be supplied. Participants should pack a trail lunch for Saturday and Sunday; all other meals will be provided. At the time of registration participants will receive a planning packet that will include a detailed packing list.
Instructors: Instructors are members of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club’s Trail Patrol who are also Leave No Trace Master Educators.

Description: This course will prepare individuals to act as Leave No Trace-recognized Trainers. This training is co-sponsored by the Lincoln Heritage Council, Boy Scouts of America and Green Earth Outdoors and will be led by a LNT Master Educator Douglas Wagoner, who has extensive experience in the theory and practice of the LNT principles. We will use the beautiful Harry S. Frazier Jr. Scout Reservation as an outdoor classroom. The training includes 16 hours of instruction and overnight camping onsite. As part of the Trainer Course curriculum, participants will be required to lead a 10-15 minute discussion or presentation on one of the Leave No Trace principles or other impact topic. Further details will be provided upon registration.
Gear: Participants will be required to bring their own camping equipment/food and cook using a small stove. If you don’t have your own stove, several small backpacking stoves will be available for use. Other equipment available upon request.

Description: The curriculum will focus on the seven principles of Leave No Trace and techniques for teaching them. Participants are asked to come prepared to teach one of the principles or a skill or some other Leave No Trace specific topic approved by the instructor. We will be advising and critiquing each other in an effort to learn more about how to effectively communicate the skills and ethics of Leave no Trace. Please keep in mind that this is a backpacking trip, NOT a backpacking course. The emphasis of this course is Leave No Trace, not backcountry travel skills. We will be hiking approximately 7 miles over the weekend, with setting up a campsite during Friday and Saturday evening. All of the materials you will need for the course will be issued to you. Please bring all of these with you to the course. If you need additional resources for your teaching session, pleas refer to the Leave No Trace website: www.LNT.org or call Nick Myers. Participants will be responsible for all of their own meals. Friday evening there will be some snack foods, other then that you will be required to furnish your own. Description: To promote, inspire, and teach leave No Trace outdoor skills and ethics to any individual who is committed to promoting responsible outdoor ethics. Anyone attending this training will be considered a Leave No Trace Trainer at the national level with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.

When: Weekend of May 3 – 4, 2008. The course will begin Saturday morning at 9am and finish Sunday afternoon. It is encouraged for participants to meet Friday evening at Steven’s Camp in the NCA. This will be a good time to organize, check gear, and enjoy a Dutch oven dinner provided by course instructors. If need be, participants can also elect to arrive early Saturday morning before we head out on the trail at 9am.
Where: Participants will meet at Steven’s Camp in the NCA Friday evening and drive down to the trail head Saturday morning. We will spend the entirety of the course backpacking through the East Fork High Rock Canyon Wilderness area of the NCA. Maps are available upon request.
Cost: Participants must provide own transportation, gear, food and water adequate for a two day backpacking course in the High-Dry Great Basin Desert.
Who: Course is open to anyone who is prepared to hike up to ten miles over two days in the desert, able to carry their own food and water, and interested in learning more about Leave No Trace.
Description: This course is a backcountry backpacking course held in a designated wilderness area of the Great Basin Desert. We will be hiking for up to ten miles over the two day period through desert and canyons. The course will take you through beautiful and quiet Pole Canyon where we will be sure to see historic homesteads, Californian Bighorn Sheep, and Raptors. The road accessing High Rock Canyon will be closed at this time due to the lambing season of the Californian Bighorn Sheep. This will allow for a scenic and undisturbed backpacking trip in our pristine wilderness areas.
The course will stress experiential learning and how Leave No Trace principles and ethics apply to desert and canyon ecosystems. Anyone involved in the outdoors: formal and informal educators, agency staff, and recreationists alike will benefit from this course. This course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to follow Leave No Trace ethics and principles, as well as provide participants with educational tools and resources in order to help spread and teach the Leave No Trace message to others. Upon completion of the course participants will be considered Leave No Trace Trainers at the national level with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.
Gear: Food and water (at least 1 gallon per/person per/day) for a two day backpacking trip. Tent, sleeping bag, and backpack to carry gear. Clothes and hiking boots that are desert appropriate. Temperatures may be as high as 80 degrees during the day and reach below freezing at night. Headlamp, cooking gear, place setting and utensils. Must have ability to treat own water.

This particular course is designed as a car camping course. We will do extensive day hikes with the majority of our training taking place in the field but camp (Friday evening) within the boundaries of the state park at the campground.
The Trainer Course will assist the participants in discovering the history of Leave No Trace, Wilderness Ethics and the seven principles of Leave No Trace. Participants will also gain insight into the techniques of teaching these low impact skills to others. We will also explore different learning styles of individuals. Each participant will teach one Leave No Trace principle at the Trainer Course. You will know the principle before the course and will have ample time to prepare. We will work together as a team on presentation style and technique. On successful completion of this course, participants will be registered as Leave No Trace Trainers with the national Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and will receive a certificate of course completion and Leave No Trace Trainer lapel pin.

Description: You will learn to demonstrate and teach state of the art minimum impact techniques and outdoor ethics to Scout troops, family, friends, and other community groups. Upon completion, you will receive a national LNT Trainer’s Certificate, LNT pin, patch, printed materials, and lots of ideas for teaching Leave No Trace Principles and Outdoor Ethics.

Cost: $500. Course fee includes LNT materials, meals (lunch first day – lunch last day), transportation to put-in and from take-out, camping permits and group equipment. Course fees do not include Touring Kayak, Paddle and personal equipment.
Description: A unique opportunity to experience the Northern Basin of Lake George by engaging in a dynamic interdisciplinary course combining a kayak expedition, outdoor leadership skills, expert interpretation of the natural, human and conservation history of Lake George, and a Leave No Trace Trainer training. Participants will receive in depth background on the Leave No Trace principles, guidance and practice in effective ways to present Leave No Trace to clients, ecological concerns and minimum impact skills. Successful completion of this course leads to a Leave No Trace Trainer Certificate. This is an expeditionary-based course that includes a kayak expedition 4 day 3 night kayak expedition on Lake George from Ft. Ticonderoga to Bolton Landing. Course content will also include paddling instruction and guest lecturers from local conservation agencies and ACC.

Where: Meet at the Camptown Office at 8:00 AM on the 17th. We will travel by 15 passenger van to Morgan Monroe State Forest for an overnight backpacking trip.
Cost: $50, due 30 days prior to course start date. Course fee includes; transportation to and from the trailhead, all equipment necessary for the trip including backpack, sleeping bag, sleep pad, tent, backpacking stove, fuel, cook set, water treatment, ditty bag, and poncho (participants may bring their own equipment if they like), food (Saturday, lunch & dinner, Sunday Breakfast) and first year Leave No Trace dues.
Description: We will spend the morning reviewing the history and need behind Leave No Trace. We will then pack up and travel 1.5 hours to our trail head at Morgan Monroe State Forest. We will backpack the hills of Southern Indiana with approximately a 3 mile hike to a backcountry campsite. We will pack out on Sunday and should return at 12:00 PM. The terrain is slightly hilly and we will be carrying all of our gear. Participants should be in good enough physical condition to hike 3 miles while carrying a 35lb pack.

Who: Participants specifically interested in Leave No Trace within
the scope of the Burning Man event. The course will also emphasize
LNT as it pertains to backpacking in the desert environment.
Description: This Leave no Trace Trainer Course is an Earth Guardian annual camping event. If you are interested in learning more about why Burning Man is the largest Leave No Trace event in the world and how you can help contribute by teaching Leave No Trace, this is the trip for you. We will also discuss ways to green Burning Man with past participants who come each year to reconnect and reinvigorate.
If you attend, you will be a Leave No Trace Trainer, meet other
active Burners, see a part of the Black Rock Desert you probably
haven’t seen before and have FUN at the same time. Creativity in your
presentation is greatly encouraged.
This trip involves carrying all your H2O, food and gear in a backpack
for approximately 1/2-1 mile to a wilderness campsite. You will be
teaching Leave No Trace as it pertains specifically to the Burning
Man event as will as to backpacking in the desert environment.
Please, sign up for the course only when you are sure that you will
attend. This will help coordinate the assignments given to the
participants for the seven principles of Leave No Trace. One of the seven principles will be presented by each of you.
On completion of this class you will receive a certificate of completion as a Leave No Trace trainer from the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics in Boulder, CO. Your mission, upon completion, will be to teach your fellow residents of Black Rock City how to Leave No Trace and green their Burn as well as spreading Leave No Trace ethics throughout your community and beyond. Description: The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club’s Trail Patrol is offering this two-day, low-mileage backpacking format course with an additional pre-outing evening classroom session designed to enhance your understanding of Leave No Trace practices and ethics and to increase your level of expertise and confidence in teaching Leave No Trace skills. Through focused activities, hands-on field experience and both formal and informal discussions, you will be introduced to concepts and methods that will advance your knowledge of Leave No Trace issues, expand your repertoire of low-impact skills and increase your effectiveness in teaching these important skills to others. Participants should be experienced campers or backpackers. Instruction will concentrate on the incorporation of low impact techniques in camping and backpacking settings, but we will not be teaching basic camping skills. This is a fun course where all participants have a part in demonstrating the choices that can be made to minimize our impact on the land and our resources.
On completion of this course, participants will be registered as Leave No Trace Trainers with the national Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and will receive a certificate of course completion as well as their Leave No Trace Trainer lapel pin.
Gear: Personal backpacking gear. All group gear, such as stoves, cooking equipment and water treatment will be supplied. Participants should pack a trail lunch for Saturday and Sunday; all other meals will be provided. At the time of registration participants will receive a planning packet that will include a detailed packing list.

Description: You will learn to demonstrate and teach state of the art minimum impact techniques and outdoor ethics to Scout troops, family, friends, and other community groups. Upon completion, you will receive a national LNT Trainer’s Certificate, LNT pin, patch, printed materials, and lots of ideas for teaching Leave No Trace Principles and Outdoor Ethics.
Gear: Camping gear: sleeping bag, tent, clothing, and personal gear (in a backpack if possible) as if you were on a two-day backpacking trip. Please bring a place setting, cup, and utensils. Check weather reports and be prepared for Mount Hood weather.

Description: A lively course in a beautiful setting! This is a one unit (credit or no credit) Columbia College short course held at historic and
rustic Baker Station between the Carson Iceberg and Emigrant Wilderness Areas in California's High Sierra (see: www.highsierrainstitute.org). The Trainer Course teaches participants the latest minimum impact skills and effective techniques for passing on good land ethics to their clients. This class is aimed at outdoor recreation professionals and volunteers (land management agency employees, youth group leaders, outfitters and guides, teachers, etc.) and leads to a Trainer Certificate from Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.

Who: Course is open to all Boy Scouts age 18 & older with backpacking experience.
Description: This course will provide participants with hands on experience in teaching Leave No Trace skills and ethics. The Trainer course is a vital component of the national Leave No Trace program. The participants will receive Leave No Trace training in a two-day format that includes a backpacking overnight. The Trainer Course will assist the participants in learning more about the seven principles of Leave No Trace and techniques for teaching these low impact skills to others. Each participant will teach one Leave No Trace principle at the Trainer Course. Upon successful completion of the Leave No Trace Trainer course each participant will become a Leave No Trace Trainer.
Those who complete the course are equipped to:
• Understand, demonstrate, and teach minimum impact techniques to friends, family, their sponsoring organization, and other community groups;
• Facilitate Awareness Workshops;
• Lead a discussion on outdoor ethics and help others explore their own personal outdoor ethic.

Description: This course will prepare individuals to act as Leave No Trace-recognized Trainers. This training is co-sponsored by the Lincoln Heritage Council, Boy Scouts of America and Green Earth Outdoors and will be led by a LNT Master Educator Douglas Wagoner, who has extensive experience in the theory and practice of the LNT principles. We will use the beautiful Harry S. Frazier Jr. Scout Reservation as an outdoor classroom. The training includes 16 hours of instruction and overnight camping onsite. As part of the Trainer Course curriculum, participants will be required to lead a 10-15 minute discussion or presentation on one of the Leave No Trace principles or other impact topic. Further details will be provided upon registration.
Gear: Participants will be required to bring their own camping equipment/food and cook using a small stove. If you don’t have your own stove, several small backpacking stoves will be available for use. Other equipment available upon request.
