Board of Directors and Committee Roles

Board of Directors

The role Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics’ Board of Directors role is to safeguard the organization’s mission and purpose. In addition, the Leave No Trace Board:

Provides proper financial oversight
Ensures adequate resources for Leave No Trace programs
Ensures legal and ethical integrity and maintains accountability
Recruits and orients new Board members and assesses Board performance
Selects, supports and evaluates the Executive Director
Enhances Leave No Trace’s public standing
Determines, monitors, and strengthens Leave No Trace’s programs and services
All members of the Leave No Trace Board of Directors are volunteers and they serve three-year terms. The Board of Directors meets twice annually.

Agency Advisors

Agency Advisors are appointed representatives by the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service that represent their federal agency in all matters pertaining to the Leave No Trace program.

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee is a committee of the Board of Directors made up chair, vice-chair, secretary, and treasurer. They provide additional support and oversight to the Executive Director between biannual Board meetings.

Educational Review Committee

The Leave No Trace Educational Review Committee (ERC) is a sub-committee of the Board of Directors of the Center for Outdoor Ethics and reviews new and existing Leave No Trace educational materials for accuracy and consistency. Additionally, the ERC reviews and critiques any text related to Leave No Trace education that deviates substantially from previously reviewed and approved wording. The committee also serves as a forum for discussing specific Leave No Trace techniques, skills and messaging. ERC review is designed to ensure programmatic consistency, nurture material development of the highest quality, and offer an experienced perspective for anyone refining or developing Leave No Trace information.
