Stephen Wilson, Clover, SC State Advocate
From the Blue Ridge region in Northwest portion of the state, through the Piedmont and continuing on to the coastal plains; South Carolina has so much to offer anyone looking to experience the outdoors! Ensuring the natural areas remain available and pristine to future generations is the main reason for involvement as the Souh Carolina State Advocate.
I was initially exposed to the principles of the Leave No Trace movement after becoming involved with Scouting with my sons Alex and Ben. I was proud to be a part of the first “Implementing Leave No Trace in the Council” training class at Philmont Scout Ranch, and now serve as the Palmetto Council’s Outdoor Ethics Advocate. It is great to see these principles learned at an early age!
My aim is to present the ethical outdoor behaviors Leave No Trace espouses to as many people in our state as possible. I want to grow a group of volunteers to provide education at schools, organizations, and public events. There is also a need to increase the number of Trainers and Master Educators in South Carolina. I will work to build relationships across public and private outdoors and conservation groups and leverage technology to get the word out. The mission statement would be “To generate a self-sustaining movement that will continue to educate the public in Leave No Trace principles, coordinated through The Center for Outdoor Ethics.”
