Statement of Purpose

Being a part of Leave No Trace and the Appalachian Mountain Club's Chapter Youth Program has provided me with the opportunity to  provide outdoor programing that helps preserve and protect the environment.  We live in the most densely populated state in the United States and have a multitude of front country and heritage opportunities to offer; from the only urban national park to colonial heritage sites. Unfortunately, our children and most adults no longer have an appreciation for the woods, their importance, their value and the heritage they contain.

We need to encourage more people to utilize the outdoors, but in a responsible manner.  I see Leave No Trace front country and group use initiatives to be the most valuable programs for doing that here.   To reach more outdoor oriented people we need to build infrastructure by increasing the number of Master Educators and Trainers.  We need to provide Awareness training to those involved in outdoor groups and clubs from the  formal to the more informal meet-up groups.

I grew up on a farm surrounded by state lands and undeveloped forest lands here in New Jersey and enjoyed what we now call “free” or “unstructured” play.  I have had the good fortune to come back  to build a public charity and to renew my association with the woods.  I am always eager to discover new ways to show, children, in particular, our environment and start them on their own journey of outdoor discovery.  I look forward to working with all of you in the Leave No Trace Community and those of you looking to understand the ethic.
