Mandy Harrison, Boone, North Carolina State Advocate
I’ve been an outdoor educator for around twenty years, starting with doing my time in therapeutic wilderness programming, going on to lead Wilderness Education Association trips, then making my way back to academia. I am currently a professor at Appalachian State University, teaching Outdoor Experiential Education in the Recreation Management major.
Over the years, my use of the Leave No Trace ethic has gone from being a short 7-point spiel that I gave at the beginning of a trip, to being the foundation that I use to plan trips, teach outdoor skills, and set expedition behavior standards. One of my main goals it to make sure that up and coming outdoor educators don’t have such a long learning curve!
My goal as a State Advocate is to act as a North Carolina Leave No Trace hub- disseminating information, and utilizing state-wide connections- including previous and current students- to help implement Leave No Trace outreach, trainings and awareness workshops.
