Hawaii Advocate

Karen Bruner, Oahu, Hawaii State Advocate

Statement of Purpose

I was born and raised in Hawaii so spent much of my youth running around outside in the sun and sand, then traveled around the USA a bit as a military wife. I started venturing out a lot with my Girl Scouts in 1998 and when I became a Boy Scout leader in 2001, I found myself in the out-of-doors more often than not. Currently I volunteer as a Boy Scout Venture Crew leader for a group of older girls and boys. I also work as a trained Challenge Outdoor Personal Experience - or COPE - Director for low initiative team building games as well as high ropes initiative courses for youth and adults. I enjoy the difference I make to the youth I serve as well as the quality time I get with my children. To me there is nothing equal to the thrill of seeing someone, anyone, gain more confidence and skill as a person or a leader. As a LNT Master Educator, I find myself learning as much as I teach.

On a personal level, I have been married to a great guy for 20 years. We have four pretty awesome kids as well as our own personal zoo - dogs, cats, birds, a tortoise, two guinea pigs, a few chameleons, a cricket farm in the bathroom and a mouse. I enjoy swimming, hiking, camping, and sailing - though I really want to try hang-gliding. I am a writer and my daughter and I are currently working on a series of children’s books together.  We all yell, laugh, get angry, cry, bleed, try, fail, try again and even succeed. So I have learned to cultivate my sense of humor, focus on what I can do, leave what I can’t do and just have fun with it.
